Neil C. Young // Guitar

Louis Potts // Drums

Mat Short // Bass Guitar

Neil C. Young heads up YoPoSh, a last-minute collaboration, that went so well last time we played, we’ve decided to do it again!

Nominated for a ‘Grammy’ award by Canadian American Records 3 times to date, Neil C. Young is an accomplished composer, arranger and musician…

Along with this performance recognition, Neil has also received acclaim for his work through the International Songwriting Competition (2006) with two pieces being shortlisted in the instrumental category, ‘Time will sing’ and ‘That Darned’, this recognition has also been given through a honourable mention at the Canary Islands International Songwriting Competition.

Neil has played and worked with many other artists across different genres through his career, Nathan Bray, Soweto Kinch, Ben Crosland, Gary Boyle, Steve Tromans, Pat McCarthy, Pat Sprakes, Wendy Kirkland, Barnaby Dickinson, The Earlies, Sara Lowes, Liam Frost, Denny Laine, King Creosote to name a few. This all add to the influences already within Neil’s playing and the influences continue to grow.

In a contemporary musical climate, which is often overcrowded with an eclectic range of guitar styles, Neil not only acknowledges these various influences, but also displays an in-depth knowledge of performance and composition, which were key to his studies with Gary Boyle and with Fred T Baker at renowned Birmingham Conservatoire.

Louis Potts provides the rhythm and percussion on this outing, taking a break from gigging and recording with Webbo and the Soft Boys →, a rock band who are seriously cool! As a session player Louis has played Glastonbury and the South By Southwest Festival in Austen, Texas and this outing sees him getting his brushes out for some syncopated style.

“Lou has been playing since before he could walk, seriously, I have a picture of him sitting on the floor in his nappy with a wooden spoon in each hand playing up-turned pots and pans – quite well!!”
Si Potts – ex-BBC session Drummer (aka dad).

Recently, he’s moved back to Nottingham to be closer to his current band Webbo & The Soft Boys having been making his living playing in London for the last few years. At home with jazz, blues, funk, rock and Latin, Louis also dabbles on guitar and bass and though he may not admit it played the flute very well in his youth.

In his youth – he’s only 23 now!!!

The third element in YoPoSh is Stray’s Coffee co-founder Mat Short, playing his late father’s Fender Jazz Bass Guitar. Originally Mat played alto sax, influenced by the likes of Ben Webster and Cannonball Adderley, originally studying with Jan Koppinski and more recently, being guided along the road of improvisation by jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger and all-round nice guy Nathan Bray.

Since the passing of his father Mat has turned over to the dark side and (other than missing his time with Nathan) hasn’t looked back! Mat’s musical tastes are far and wide from Duke Ellington to Steely Dan, Nicola Conte to LTJ Bukem, Kasabian to Janek Gwizdala.

Expect a mix of styles and tunes on this date, from artists including Sting to Duke Ellington, Cole Porter to Gershwin, Jobim to Henry Mancini, Bob Berg to Charles Mingus to mention a few…
