Mat Short // Bass Guitar

Elliot Lewis first played at Stray’s a few weeks ago as a last-minute dep’. He got the call on the Friday afternoon at 3pm and by Saturday at 3pm, he was calling the tunes for drummer Louis Potts and bass player Mat Short. Since then, we’ve been keen to secure another date with Elliott and Saturday 16th September is the date!

Elliott is probably best known for his Gypsy Jazz band Swing Gitan, who enjoy success both in the UK and abroad. Elliott plays a really light but technically superb style of guitar which can only be described as Wes Montgomery meets Django! A fan of both swing and the more ‘cool’ jazz, Elliott has a very lyrical style and is very melodic in his playing – a real joy to listen to.

Louis Potts has followed in his dads footsteps, albeit getting his degree from BIMM first! Currently playing gigs up and down the UK, Louis mixes styles and is as happy playing jazz as he is playing psychedelic rock and singing vocals (he’s a rather good singer actually). He currently provides all things rhythm for Webbo & the Soft Boys as a professional drummer.

For the Saturday Sessions they’re joined by Stray’s co-owner Mat Short on bass guitar. Originally playing alto sax, Mat turned to the dark side and has been playing his late father’s bass guitar since his passing over 2 years ago. Having been taught improvisation by saxophone supremo Jan Kopinski, Mat also spent a couple of years under the watchful eye of jazz trumpeter Nathan Bray, until he switched to playing bass.

Mat’s cites his musical influences as wide ranging as Stanley Turrentine, Pat Sprakes, LTJ Bukem, Duke Ellington  James Brown, Steely Dan – he also loves playing bass in his church worship team!
